Where’s my NBN?
There’s no denying it, Australia has slow internet. Each week clients complain to me about their slow internet and their limited and generally expensive alternative options. The NBN promised to fix this by delivering fast and affordable internet to all Australians. The reality however is very different, with the NBN rollout being be slow and reports of speed being below what was promised.
There’s a lot of confusion around the NBN. Quite fairly people can’t understand why it’s taking so long to deliver. The promise was that the NBN would deliver to all Australian’s speeds of 25Mpbs or higher by 2016. Now the NBN isn’t due to be completed until 2020, and who knows what the average speed will be?
Where did it all go wrong?
The NBN rollout has been behind pretty much from day one. There was always going to be the inevitable teething problems that come with a massive infrastructure project; but, unfortunately, when Liberal Party won the 2013 election they decided the NBN was going to be too expensive. The then Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull scrapped the rollout of fibre to the premises (FTTP) in favour of several ‘cheaper’ technologies. When will you see the NBN in your neighbourhood?
People, especially business owners, most want to know when they can get NBN. You can check when your home or office is being connected to the NBN with their checker tool. Most of the time when I do this for clients, I find that the planned availability is sometime in 2018 with a little asterisk to say “This date is an estimate and could change”. Until the NBN build has been commenced in your area, consider the time frames given as very rubbery. I expect that planned dates will move further back as the NBN experiences more problems and delays.
What should you do when the NBN arrives?
When NBN is available in your area you will be informed via direct mail. You will not be automatically moved to the NBN, however, you have 18 months to move your service. What’s important to note is that both your internet and phone line will be disconnected as part of the NBN rollout so you need to ensure you move both services to a new NBN service within this 18 month window. This ACCC web page highlights the important aspects of moving to the NBN and it is worth reading.
There will be costs to move to the NBN, most likely you will need a new router and you may need to upgrade to your phone system. Additionally, you will need the help of an IT professional to get the NBN hooked up and working with your computers.
